SUBJECT: EL SALVADOR'S RESPONSE TO DEMARCHE ON IRISL

REF: 10 STATE 16220

1. (SBU) Poloff met with Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)
officials on February 24 to discuss the Iranian shipping line
IRISL. MFA representative Egriselda Gonzalez of the Multilateral
Affairs Office said the MFA was aware of the shipping line and the
nature of the problem, but appreciated the opportunity to learn
more about the specific problems posed by IRISL. Gonzalez noted
that El Salvador is generally supportive of U.S. actions regarding
Iran, but that the specific actions requested in reftel would have
to be referred to CEPA, the agency that administers El Salvador's
maritime port authority.

2. (SBU) In a follow-up communication on February 25, Gonzalez
told Poloff that the MFA had informed CEPA of the matter and will
contact the Embassy with an official response.
