SUBJECT: FIGURES ON OMAN'S LATEST LABOR ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS

(U) On January 20 the Omani Ministry of Manpower reported that
9,180 expatriates appeared before the Ministerial arbitral
department, of which 3,335 were deported for 'overstaying' and/or
'absconding' within the last year. (NOTE: "Absconding" means not
remaining in the employ of the original sponsor. END NOTE.) The
deported expatriates had absconded or overstayed during calendar
year 2009. Ministry of Manpower officials have increasingly
inspected private sector offices to ensure that their labor force
has their visa authorization to work for the current sponsor
pursuant to Oman's labor law and ministerial decisions.
