SUBJECT: ANGOLAN CANDIDACY TO THE U.N. HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL 
 
 
1. (U) On May 3, 2007 Embassy Luanda received diplomatic note 
number 40/00.13, dated April 23, 2007, from the Angolan 
Ministry of External Relations requesting U.S. Government 
support for the Angolan candidacy to the U.N. Human Rights 
Council which will be voted on in May 2007. 
 
2. (U) Informal translation follows: 
 
The Ministry of External Relation's Department of 
International Organizations presents its compliments to the 
Embassy of the United States of America in Angola and has the 
honor of informing the Embassy that the Government of Angola 
has decided to present its candidacy for election as a member 
of the Human Rights Council, for elections that will take 
place during the 61st Session of the UN General Assembly in 
May 2007 in New York. 
 
The Government of Angola places great importance in the 
promotion and protection of all human rights, and on the work 
carried out by the Human Rights Council, and sees this work 
as essential in order to strengthen the protection of human 
rights around the world. 
 
The Government of Angola would appreciate the USG,s valuable 
support for its candidacy to the Human Rights Council and is 
available to negotiate an exchange of support with the USG.
