SUBJECT: MFA STATEMENT ON UN RESOLUTION 1701

1. Embassy Bridgetown received via fax a statement from
Dominica's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Labour on
UN Resolution 1701.

Begin Text

Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and
Labour on the UN Resolution 1701 Calling for a Ceasefire in
the Lebanon/Israeli Conflict

The Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica welcomes
Resolution 1701 adopted unanimously by the United Nations
Security Council on Friday August 11, 2006 after one month of
intense fighting, which calls for an immediate cessation of
hostilities and for Israel and Lebanon to support a permanent
ceasefire and work towards a long-term resolution of
differences.

Government has observed with grave concern the cycle of
violence that has unfolded between Israel and Lebanon since
the events of July 12 which has resulted in widespread human
suffering and loss of innocent life in both Israel and
Lebanon; has caused extensive damage to civilian
infrastructure; and posed a threat to international peace and
security.

Resolution 1701 which was unanimously adopted by all 15
members of the Security Council offers some hope for a
lasting peace between Israel and Lebanon. The acceptance of
the resolution by both countries has increased the chances of
a permanent ceasefire and a long term solution to conflicts
between them. It would not be enough merely to return to the
situation which existed prior to July 12, 2006.

The Government of Dominica therefore hopes that Israel and
Lebanon will respect the principles and elements set forth in
Resolution 1701 to ensure the maintenance of the ceasefire
and the implementation of a long term solution to this crisis
and, with the support of the international community, make
every effort to bring lasting peace to the Middle East.
