SUBJECT: HUNGARY: CEDAW CANDIDACY 
 
 
1.  Mission has received a note from the Permanent Mission of 
the Republic of Hungary to the United Nations requesting USG 
support for the candidature of Prof. Dr. Andrea Peto for 
election to the Committee on the Elimination of 
Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) for the term 2007-2010. 
The elections will be held during the meeting of States 
Parties to the Convention, on June 23, 2006, in New York. 
 
2.  Mission will respond that since the United States is not 
a party to the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of 
Discrimination against Women, the United States cannot 
participate in the election.
