SUBJECT: Update on PKK Violence (May 8-15, 2009) 
 
(U) Sensitive but unclassified - please protect accordingly. 
 
1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK 
violence in Turkey.  Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff 
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as 
well as casualties incurred. 
 
2. (U) During the May 8-15, 2009, five security officials were 
killed, including four due to IED detonations on May 9, 11 and 12, 
and one in clashes on May 15.  Another five were injured, including 
two due to an IED explosion on May 11, and three during clashes on 
May 15.  The total number of security force casualties for the year 
through May 15, was 19 killed and 16 injured. 
 
3. (U) During the same period, nine PKK terrorists were killed in 
clashes, including on May 10 and May 15.  One PKKer was captured on 
May 14 in Batman Province and three PKKers surrendered in Silopi in 
Sirnak Province on May 11 and May 14.   According to official TGS 
website figures, through the second week of May, the number of PKK 
militants killed this year was 19, the number of those captured was 
20, and the number of those who surrendered was 42. 
 
4. (U) During the reporting period three civilians died on May 9 
from an explosion attributed to a PKK IED in Sirnak Province. 
Another three were injured in a second IED detonation on May 9, also 
in Sirnak Province.  The total number of civilian casualties for the 
year through the end of the second week of May was four killed and 
eight wounded.
