Understanding cables

1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK 
violence in Turkey.  Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff 
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as 
well as casualties incurred. 
 
2. (U) During the April 8-15, 2009, three security officials were 
killed in clashes, including two in Sirnak Province on April 10, and 
one in Dicle, Diyarbakir Province on April 15.  Six security 
officials were injured, including three in clashes on April 10 and 
15 and the rest due to IED or landmine explosions on April 10, 12 
and 15.  The total number of security force casualties for the year 
through April 15, was three killed and nine injured. 
 
3. (U) During the same period, seven PKK terrorists were killed in 
clashes on April 10, in Sirnak Province.  One was captured in 
Semdinli, Hakkari Province on April 13.  Four PKKers surrendered, 
including two in Cukurca, Hakkari Province on April 8, one in 
Semdinli on April 10, and one in Gole, Ardahan Province (far 
Northeast) on April 10.   According to official TGS website figures, 
through the second week of April, the number of PKK militants killed 
this year was nine, the number of those captured was 15, and the 
number of those who surrendered was 34. 
 
4. (U) During the reporting period one civilian died when his car 
hit a PKK IED on the road near Silopi, Sirnak Province on April 14. 
The total number of civilian casualties for the year through the end 
of the second week of April, was one killed and five wounded.
