SUBJECT: Update on PKK Violence (July 1-7, 2008)

1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK 
violence in Turkey.  Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff 
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as 
well as casualties incurred. 
 
2. (U) During the July 1-7, 2008 reporting period, one security 
official was killed when he stepped on an IED.  No security 
officials were injured.   The total number of security force 
casualties for the year through July 7, 2008, was 53 killed and 82 
injured. 
 
3. (U) During the same period, four PKK terrorists were killed in 
clashes.  No PKKers were captured, but two  surrendered in Silopi, 
Sirnak Province on July 3.  According to official TGS website 
figures, through the first week of July, the number of PKK militants 
killed this year was 511, the number of those captured was 107, and 
the number of those who surrendered was 86. 
 
4. (U) No civilian was killed or injured during the week of July 
1-7.  The total number of civilian casualties for the year through 
the end of the first week of July was 17 killed, with another 67 
wounded.
