SUBJECT: BURMA: FRANCE SUPPORTS SECURITY COUNCIL FOR
RESOLUTION TO AID CYCLONE VICTIMS

REF: STATE 48651

(SBU) MFA desk officer for Burma, Jeremie Petite reported
that France is in complete agreement with the reftel
demarche. France has 3 million dollars (2 million euros) in
aid ready to assist victims. As for next steps, the GOF is
currently devising a strategy to deal with recent reports
that the Burmese regime seized UN aid shipments. While the
French have not yet determined how they will react to the
seizure of aid, MFA desk officer Jeremie Petite told poloff
that he believes France will increase pressure for a Security
Council resolution that would allow humanitarian assistance
regardless of Burmese objections.
