Understanding cables

(MNJ) RELEASES 25 HOSTAGES

1.  On Sunday, March 9, 2008, the MNJ website reported on the 
release of "25 military prisoners, including the Prefet of 
Tanout."  The website reports that the release of the 
hostages marks the first anniversary of the MNJ after more 
than a year of hostilities against the Government of Niger 
(GON).  The hostages were reported to have been released to 
"Supreme Leader of the Libyan Revolution Mouamar Khadafi." 
 
2. This MNJ action follows the recent release by Malian 
rebels of 22 prisoners. 
 
3. There has yet to be a GON reaction to the report.  Post 
will keep Department informed of developments.
