SUBJECT: BULGARIAN CONFIRMS SUPPORT FOR U.S. CANDIDATE TO
COMMITTEE ON THE ELIMINATION OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION

REF: A. SECSTATE 157656
     B. SOFIA 01324
     C. SOFIA 00029

In a "note verbale" dated January 11, the GOB Ministry of
Foreign Affairs confirmed that the GOB will support the U.S.
candidate, Mr. Pierre-Richard Prosper, for re-election to the
UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Post will forward the "note verbale" to the Desk Officer.

The unofficial translation of the "note verbale" is as
follows:

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria
presents its compliment to the Embassy of the United States
of America in Sofia and in response to the latter's request
has the honor to inform that the Government of Bulgaria has
decided to support the candidature of Mr. Pierre-Richard
Prosper for re-election to the UN Committee on the
Elimination of Racial Discrimination at the elections which
will take place on the 17th January, 2008, in New York.

Within the framework of our traditional and beneficial
co-operation, Bulgaria, for its part, would highly appreciate
the favorable support of the United States of America for
future appropriate Bulgarian candidates to elected bodies of
international organizations, of which both countries are
members.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria
avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Embassy of
the United States of America in Sofia the assurances of its
highest consideration.

Sofia, 11th January, 2008"
