SUBJECT: LITHUANIA SUPPORTS UNESCO ADDRESSING HOLOCAUST
REMEMBRANCE AND EDUCATION

REF: SECSTATE 99971

We delivered reftel points to Darius Staniulis, head of the
MFA's Human Rights and NGOs Division, on July 19. He told us
the GOL agrees it is important for countries to educate their
citizens on the Holocaust. He added that, although the GOL
has not discussed this issue yet, they are certain to support
such a resolution. Staniulis added that the GOL also wants
international organizations, such as the EU, to address the
crimes committed by totalitarian regimes, i.e., the Soviet
Union. Staniulis agreed to pass reftel information to others
within the GOL who have an interest in Holocaust issues,
including an adviser to the Prime Minister and the director
of the GOL's International Commission for the Evaluation of
the Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes in
Lithuania.
