SUBJECT: GREECE: SIGNED BUT NOT RATIFIED NUCLEAR TERRORISM
CONVENTION

REF: SECSTATE 102149

ΒΆ1. (SBU) On July 23, DepPolCouns discussed reftel issues
concerning the International Convention for Suppression of
Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (NTC) with MFA D1 Directorate for
International Organizations Counsellor Photis Bourlogiannis.
Bourlogiannis said Greece was amongst the first signatories
of the NTC when it was opened for signature at the 2005 UN
General Assembly, though the Greek Parliament had not yet
ratified the convention. Bourlogiannis said ratification
entailed lengthy comment periods on the part of various
interested ministries. Ratification legislation was
progressing and had not stalled, but he did not expect any
further action until after the summer vacation season.
