Understanding cables

1. PKK attacks in southeast Turkey for the week of June 5-11 
killed four Turkish security forces personnel and one 
civilian, a ten year-old child (according to press reports). 
During the same week, 15 security forces were WIA, as were 
seven civilians.  Two PKK terrorists were killed in a 
firefight with Turkish soldiers in Diyarbakir province.  In 
addition to the above, the PKK also claimed responsibility 
for a June 3 bombing in Mersin which injured 15 civilians. 
 
2. According to press, the ten year-old child was killed when 
a PKK IED exploded under a civilian vehicle in Cizre, in 
Sirnak province (five other civilians were wounded).  Cizre 
is about 40 km from the Iraq-Turkey Habur Gate border 
crossing, and is on the main road trucks use to approach the 
gate.
