1. (SBU) Summary: On May 2, Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister 
Mitoji Yabunaka delivered a list of planned donations of 
Tamiflu and personal protective equipment (PPEs) to ASEAN 
Secretary General Ong Keng Yong.  The tamilfu and PPEs are

for ASEAN's use in case of an influenza pandemic.  The U.S. 
CDC and the University of Hong Kong confirmed May 6 one new 
human H5N1 case that the Ministry of Health (MOH) previously 
listed as probable.  End summary. 
 
2. (U) On May 2, Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Mitoji 
Yabunaka presented to ASEAN Secretary General Mr. Ong Keng 
Yong a list of items for ASEAN's use in case of a pandemic. 
They included 500,000 courses of Tamiflu and 700,000 sets of 
personal protective equipment (PPE), which will be 
stockpiled in Singapore.  The project is part of an 
initiative Prime Minister Koizumi unveiled at the last ASEAN- 
Japan Summit meeting held in December 2005, when Japan 
announced plans to contribute 7.5 billion yen (USD 70.1 
million) to help with ASEAN integration.  According to a 
Japanese Embassy press release, a new Japan-ASEAN 
Integration Fund (JAIF), officially launched on March 27, 
2006, will finance the stockpiling of these items, which 
should be completed within a few months. 
 
Human AI Case Profile

3. (U) NAMRU-2 reports 1 new confirmed H5N1 case in humans 
in the past week.  The U.S. CDC and the University of Hong 
Kong confirmed May 6 the probable case of the 30-year old 
male as positive for H5N1.  Thus the number of confirmed 
H5N1 cases in humans increased to 36, with 27 deaths. 
 
4. (SBU) NAMRU-2 data indicates the following AI-related 
case profile as of May 11: 
 
-- Number of laboratory confirmed (positive PCR and/or 
serology) human AI cases: 36, of which 27 have been fatal 
(fatality rate of 75 percent). 
 
-- Number of probable AI cases: 3, with 2 deaths (fatality 
rate of 67 percent). 
 
-- Number of cases awaiting verification by the US CDC: 0. 
 
-- Number of possible AI cases under investigation: 
approximately 15. 
 
-- Number of excluded AI cases: 281.
