SUBJECT: SOUTHEAST TURKEY PRESS SUMMARY JUNE 14, 2004 
 
This is the Southeastern Turkey press summary for June 14, 2004.

POLITICAL, SECURITY, HUMAN RIGHTS 
 
HURRIYET/MILLIYET/CUMHURIYET/RADIKAL/TERCUMAN /MILLI 
GAZETE/TURKIYE/BOLGE/EVRENSEL/VAKIT/YENI SAFAK/ULKEDE OZGUR 
GUNDEM: Former DEP deputies, Leyla Zana, Orhan Dogan, Hatip 
Dicle, and Selim Sadak attended DEHAP's Diyarbakir meeting after 
they were discharged from Ankara prison. Addressing to 
approximately one hundred thousand people, Leyla Zana called on 
the Kongra Gel to extend the truce for six more months and urged 
the government to make the legal arrangements for regaining the 
militants who are in prison or in the mountains. The crowd 
carried Abdullah Ocalan's pictures and chanted pro-Ocalan 
slogans. The former DEP deputies visited Diyarbakir Governor 
Nusret Miroglu at his office yesterday. 
 
SABAH/TURKIYE/BOLGE: The Bingol security officials 
announced that a hand grenade exploded in the hands of one of 
the terrorists trying to attack the jandarma casino in Bingol 
last night. Reinforcements were sent to the scene and as a 
result of the ensuing clashes two terrorists were killed. 
Entrance and exit to the town was taken under control. 
 
EVRENSEL/TURKIYE/YENI SAFAK: All mayors from Tunceli 
province expressed concern in a joint press announcement about 
KONGRA GEL's ending the truce which had created partial 
reconciliation in the region. The mayors stated that they would 
support steps by all sides for developing the climate for peace 
and dialogue. 
 
SABABH (Guney)/EKSPRES: In Adana, based on a tip, 
jandarma from the Jandarma Intelligence Section Directorate and 
Incirlik Jandarma Command arrested red- handed Halit K. and 
Mustafa K. while they were selling six pistols, one weapon and 
assorted bullets and clips to jandarma who pretended to be 
buyers. 
 
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTS: 
 
SABABH (Guney): One of Turkey's largest domestic- 
source-based power plants, the Afsin-Elbistan Power Plant in 
Kahramanmaras province,  will come into operation in 2005. The 
first unit of the plant, which will run on low grade lignite, 
will be opened in July 2004. The energy plant is being 
constructed on a BOT basis by the Mitsubishi Heavy -Deutsche 
Bacook-Gama/Tekfen, and Tokar-Enka consortium for 1.21 billion 
US dollars and 29.995 million Euros.
