Viewing cable 04AMMAN342, FY-04 FUNDED VOLUNTARY VISITOR PROGRAM ON

If you are new to these pages, please read an introduction on the structure of a cable as well as how to discuss them with others. See also the FAQs

Understanding cables
Every cable message consists of three parts:
  • The top box shows each cables unique reference number, when and by whom it originally was sent, and what its initial classification was.
  • The middle box contains the header information that is associated with the cable. It includes information about the receiver(s) as well as a general subject.
  • The bottom box presents the body of the cable. The opening can contain a more specific subject, references to other cables (browse by origin to find them) or additional comment. This is followed by the main contents of the cable: a summary, a collection of specific topics and a comment section.
To understand the justification used for the classification of each cable, please use this WikiSource article as reference.

Discussing cables
If you find meaningful or important information in a cable, please link directly to its unique reference number. Linking to a specific paragraph in the body of a cable is also possible by copying the appropriate link (to be found at theparagraph symbol). Please mark messages for social networking services like Twitter with the hash tags #cablegate and a hash containing the reference ID e.g. #04AMMAN342.

SUBJECT: FY-04 FUNDED VOLUNTARY VISITOR PROGRAM ON
"RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE AND COEXISTENCE".

1. THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS SECTION REQUESTS A FUNDED VOLUNTARY
VISITOR PROGRAM FOR TEN DAYS STARTING THE FIRST WEEK OF
MARCH, 2004 FOR THREE LEADING JORDANIAN SCHOLARS ON
"RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE AND COEXISTENCE." THE REQUEST SUPPORTS
THE MISSION'S LONG TERM OBJECTIVES OF "DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN
RIGHTS" AND "U.S. SOCIETY AND VALUES." FUNDING IS REQUESTED
TO COVER PER DIEM AND DOMESTIC TRAVEL. WE ALSO REQUEST ONE
ESCORT-INTERPRETER TO ACCOMPANY THE GROUP. THE PARTICIPANTS
WILL COVER THE COST OF INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL.

THE JORDANIAN INTERFAITH COEXISTENCE RESEARCH CENTER,
ESTABLISHED IN 2003, SEEKS TO PROMOTE INTERFAITH COEXISTENCE
DOMESTICALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY, PARTLY BY ESTABLISHING
DIALOGUE AND INTERNATIONAL TIES, PARTICULARLY WITH ISLAMIC,
CHRISTIAN, AND JEWISH GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS. THE PROGRAM
SUPPORTS THE MISSION GOAL OF DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS AND,
TO A LESSER EXTENT, THE GOALS OF PUBLIC DIPLOMACY AND
REGIONAL STABILITY. IT WOULD EXPOSE THESE JORDANIAN
RELIGIOUS AND SOCIETAL LEADERS TO AMERICAN SOCIETY, WITH A
PROGRAMMATIC EMPHASIS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND TOLERANCE,
AND PROMOTE ENDURING CONTACTS WITH AMERICANS ON THESE
ISSUES. IN ADDITION, THE PROGRAM WOULD PROVIDE AN
OPPORTUNITY TO STRENGTHEN U.S. ENGAGEMENT WITH JORDANIAN
LEADERS ON RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE IN THE REGION, A KEY AMERICAN
VALUE.

THE PARTICIPANTS ARE UNIQUELY SUITED TO BENEFIT FROM THIS
PROGRAM. NABIL HADDAD, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE CENTER AND
A MELKITE PRIEST, IS A LONGTIME AND FREQUENT CONTACT OF THE
POLITICAL SECTION. HE HAS PROVED AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF
INFORMATION THROUGH HIS INVOLVEMENT IN HUMAN RIGHTS AND
RELIGIOUS FREEDOM ISSUES, AND WE EXPECT HIS PARTICIPATION IN
THIS PROGRAM WILL BOTH INCREASE HIS ENGAGEMENT CAPACITY AND
EXPAND HIS ABILITY TO PROMOTE INTERFAITH DIALOGUE. H.E. MR.
IZZEDDIN AL TAMIMI IS JORDAN'S SENIOR ISLAMIC JUDGE AND
SERVES IN A NUMBER OF OTHER GOVERNMENTAL AND NON-
GOVERNMENTAL CAPACITIES. THEREFORE, HE HAS DIRECT INFLUENCE
ON GOJ POLICY AND WOULD BENEFIT THE USG WITH HIS INCREASED
KNOWLEDGE OF AND TIES TO THE U.S. MR. SAMI GAMMOH, A FORMER
GOVERNMENT MINISTER WITH EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN THE U.S.,
WOULD BENEFIT THE USG WITH HIS INCREASED EXPOSURE TO THIS
ASPECT OF AMERICAN SOCIETY AND VALUES. THE CHRISTIAN-MUSLIM
COMPOSITION OF THE GROUP IS INDICATIVE OF THE DIALOGUE IT
PROMOTES.
