SUBJECT:  SOUTHEAST TURKEY PRESS SUMMARY, 
          OCTOBER 11-13, 2003 
 
 
1. This is the Southeastern Turkey press summary 
for October 11-13, 2003.  Please note that 
Turkish press reports often contain errors or 
exaggerations; AmConsulate Adana does not vouch

POLITICAL, SECURITY, HUMAN RIGHTS 
 
 
2. Ozgur Gundem / Sevim Yetkiner was re-elected as 
the new head of the Mus Human Rights 
Organization. 
 
 
3. Ozgur Gundem / Z.Y, a man released from Urfa 
Prison, stated that Halil Aykut and Mustafa 
Eroglu, guards in the prison, supplied guns and 
drugs for Mustafa Zincirlioglu from the Bucak 
tribe. 
 
 
4. Ozgur Gundem, Evrensel / A Van Private Kurdish 
Language Center is starting Kurdish courses on 
October 15. 
 
 
5. Evrensel / Dogan Karaoglan, head of the Malatya 
Human Rights Organization, stated that the "aim 
of sending Turkish troops to Iraq is definitely 
the Kurdish people in Iraq, Kurdish 
organizations and KADEK." Karaoglan announced 
that "the whole world is against this attack 
and is not sending its troops to Iraq, but our 
(Turkish) government is sending troops to put 
our country in a war under the leadership of 
the US." 
 
 
ECONOMIC 
 
 
6. Turkiye / An Adana Chamber of Industry Turkish 
business delegation returned from Iraq. Huseyin 
Sagar, head of the delegation, announced that 
there is a need for Turkish businessmen in the 
area and that Iraqi businessmen want to see 
more Turkish colleagues doing business with 
them.
