Understanding cables

SUBJECT:  SOUTHEAST TURKEY PRESS SUMMARY, 
          SEPTEMBER 20-22, 2003 
 
 
1. This is the Southeastern Turkey press summary 
for September 20-22, 2003.  Please note that 
Turkish press reports often contain errors or 
exaggerations; AmConsulate Adana does not vouch

POLITICAL, SECURITY, HUMAN RIGHTS 
 
 
2. Ekspres, Bolge, Turkiye / American R. Gilvray 
Ronald, an investment counselor at Incirlik and 
former boyfriend of Meryem Martin, was 
assaulted at Baraj woods in Adana.  Martin 
convinced Ronald to go to the Baraj Woods in 
Adana where five men beat him up.  After the 
attack, Martin dropped him off near the Seyhan 
Hotel. Ronald's secretary took him to Adana 
Numune Hospital for emergency treatment. Then 
he went to the police to make a complaint about 
Meryem Martin, who he believes arranged for the 
five men to beat him. 
 
 
3. Evrensel / Adana Anti-War Platform is 
organizing a meeting in Adana on September 27, 
known as the "Support Day" for Palestine. 
Human Rights Organization and some workers' 
Unions will give support for the meeting. 
 
 
4. Bolge / W. Scott Reid, the new US Consul in 
Adana, visited Sahabettin Ozarslaner, Mayor of 
Van.  Ozarslaner and Reid exchanged ideas about 
the problems, investments and possible projects 
of local governments. 
 
 
ECONOMIC 
 
 
5. Sabah Guney / A fifteen member delegation from 
Syria, including some governors, mayors and 
heads of chamber of commerce, visited Sanliurfa 
Governor Sukru Kocatepe. 
 
 
TOURISM and CULTURE 
 
 
6. Cumhuriyet / During the excavation works in 
Gobeklitepe, Sanliurfa province, a group of 
German and Turkish archeologists discovered a 
temple from the Neolithic Age which is believed 
to be the biggest known temple in the world.
